NUMERALS
Our numerals are sometimes referred to as ‘arabic’ numerals, but actually originated in India, and even Arabs call the ‘arqam hindaya’ (indian numerals).
The fact that they have an origin separate from the latin alphabet, and had a rather late inclusion into the manuscript tradition in the 1200s, make them a little difficult to include into our various scripts. However, it is an nice challenge, opening up possibilities for interesting interpretations.
You may be familiar with the Fibonacci series and the mathematician Leonardo Fibonacci, who introduced these numerals into Europe in 1202 through the book Liber Abaci.
In fact, even the Fibonacci series was older, originating in India.
We will go through the history of the numerals and look at different interpretations of them. There will be lectures, demonstrations and homework. All levels are welcome!
