Virgil, first book of the Georgics. 4th Century. Original letter height 6 mm.

Capitalis Quadrata is a formal Roman book hand. It takes its form from both the inscriptional letters and the rustica of the time, but serif formation and certain other traits points to the pen as the primary letter making tool, rather than hammer /chisel or broad edged brush.

It is a rare, but valuable addition to the scribe’s palette of hands, and is an easy way to approach the Roman Capital letter, which has survived for more than 2000 years.
